We're trying to link 2 GBA SPs together but the cable link doesn't seem to work. Does each GBA have to have the same game loaded before the connection will work?

yes they do unless it is of the same series like pokemon or zelda

no.. we play supermario brothers using one game cartridge in my dautghers gameboy sp and my son's older style gb with no cartridge at all.
