Plenty. My mom made me matching pink dresses with my best friend in Kindergarten. She made me a few other skirts or dresses over time, and she made all kinds of Halloween costumes. My grandma made a few things for me too - mostly knitted gloves and sweaters and things. A friend had her bridesmaid dresses (including mine - dreadful purple things with butt-bows) made by a friend of hers. But that isn't anything on another friend of mine whose mother made almost all his clothes - jeans, jackets, and all.

Yes. I still wear a beautiful sweater my grandmother knitted for my 18th birthday in 1977. I can and do knit, sew, crochet, embroider, & weave. However, aside from lots of heavy duty winter socks and a first and only one time sample sweater made of fine kevlar wire, I rarely make clothing, but I sure do patch & repair as well as decorate some of my clothing ... I have hand embroidered the patches for my martial arts uniforms and have tried to copy old record album covers onto the backs of jean jackets.

My mom..she was a seamstress so she made all our clothes..my younger sister's and mine. She worked for some local designers sewing their samples for runway shows and presentation of each designer's new line. She did beautiful work. I, on the other hand, made one thing for my son..a bathrobe when he was about 2..he was able to wear it until he was six because I had very big hems and kept letting them out to fit him..it was a red robe and I was very proud of it. He probably doesn't even remember! :)

My mom used to make a lot of my dresses when I was a wee one. She still has the same sewing machine too. According to her I was a right pain in the arse about my clothes. What do you excpect from someone who grew up in the 70s. She got tired of little Andy putting her hands on her hips and smatmouthing at the store (shame on me). "Ughhh, that is sooooooo the Waltons!" "Do I look like I belong on Little House on the Prairie?" So, she dragged out the sewing machine and let me pick patterns and fabric. It turned out to be a great mother and daughter project. My Aunt also made many of my baby blankets (quilts actually) and I still have them. Not clothes, but. . .

My dad made most of my clothes growing up and my older sisters and my mothers too. He taught me to sew at 12. He worked a full time job for the government where he planned and maintained every kind of jet or helicopter, prop that the government used to train it's pilots and was out of town a lot for meetings on designing the aircraft. He also would tear apart a car and put it together again, could fix anything like a t.v. or radio, built a 3,000 square foot house by scratch all alone after work each day and weekend and had it paid off by the time he finished it 5 years later. He bought mother a sewing machine in 1949 and she didn't know how to use it so he taught himself how to do it and then taught her. She could never put in zippers and he could do anything ( without a pattern) and when he died the first thing she said was "who will put in my zippers now? He did everything for me." The man was a genius, made beautiful jewelry to go with my mother's gowns for formal wear and was very artistic. There was nothing that man couldn't do. Including grow all of our food and take care of our cattle and livestock. They don't make men like that anymore. Incidentally, he was EXTREMELY macho and hunted and fished all of the time. He built a 5 acre stocked fish pond in his back yard when he finished building the house.

My grandpa was a taylor (he did not sew my old blue jeans like the House of the Rising Sun song though). He made clothes that were so unbelievably perfect, he could have been in a top design house. Tho' this question is kind of old (LoL), I have to answer yes, unfortunately. We grew up "dirt" poor, and my Mom HAD to try and make and patch clothes. One time, she made my little brother and I these funky looking shirts that she said the actor Tony Curtis always wore. She actually did a fairly good job on them, but, as I said to her then ... I am NOT a Tony Curtis fan! But, we had to wear them anyway. The best thing she ever did was, we had to get our jeans thru the Sears catalog (plain old straight-legged, colored jeans that cost about $2 or $3 bucks a pair). Well, at that time, EVERYONE wore "bell-bottoms", so, as usual, we were way behind the times. Well, one week-end, she got an idea and spent the whole week-end altering our jeans. She took each pair, split the 2 seams on each leg, up about 8 inches, and inserted material to make them into bell-bottoms! She actually started a trend ... (half the kids went home and told their Moms to make some just like it)! That was one of the VERY few times, as a kid, that we were considered kinda cool, even tho' dirt poor!
