  • With an axe.
  • Its a very tough nut to crack - we use a large nail and hammer to make the first hole and drain the milk. Make the hole near one of the ends (top/bottom). Then use the hammer to smash it to pieces. We don't eat coconut very often!
  • There is no comparison between fresh coconut milk and the best of cans, and there is a big difference between brands. Some are awful and hardly have any thick cream, just cloudy milky soup. To crack a coconut just for use, whack at the 'waistline' all around a few times with a cleaver. It will crack neatly into 2 halves. If you want to make coconut milk, poke two of the eyes out with a screw driver whack with a hammer. Then place them (do more than one as you can save all the meat in your freezer for next time:-) on a cookie sheet in a hot oven 400°F for about 15-20 minutes. This will help the meat separate from the sides. Take out and cool. Don't COOK the coconut, you just want to dry it out a little. Then when it's cool enough to handle, place it on a towel or in your hand and whack around the middle with a cleaver and it will break into 2 halves. Taker you screwdriver and pry the meat away from the sides. You can freeze the meat from the other coconuts and use the meat from one. You can peel the brown part with a veggie peeler/parer. Cut or break into small pieces and chop as fin3ely as possible with a food processor or a blender. Then place the coconut into a bowl with about 2 cups of hot water. Let sit for 10 minutes. Then strain through a fine strainer. Wring out the coconut pulp in a cloth to make things easier. This will be the creamiest of your coconut milk. Add another two cups of hot water to the pulp, steep, strain and press again. This will be lighter and more milk-like. IN Thai cooking the first creamy pressing is used fro frying your curries with the lighter milk added later. Use the lighter milk for soups. If you want you can try for a third time just to make soup.

  • The KungFu master in Malaysia could do it with his index finger. But ordinary mortals would require more than their fingers and teeth to do the job. . It is the dehusking that will certainly require a tool. There are specialized tools for this using which upto 120 coconuts can be dehusked by one person in an hour. There are automatic hydraulic mechines that could dehusk thousands of coconuts in an hour. . Breaking open the shell of the coconut after dehusking is easy. If no instrument is available a hard rock will serve the purpose. For scrapping the insides of a coconut too there are special instruments available.
