probably a shortened form of Mexican Sp. potiguaya "marijuana leaves." First recorded from about 1938. According to Online Etymology Dictionary http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=pot Oh Man! I used to have that LP. I wonder what happened to it. Hard to beleave it was recorded way back in 1938, what with the stereo and the electric guitar feedback.Man , we used to sit around listening to Patty Guaya and the Mexican Leaves while we were... huh? what was the question? Oh yeah. I went to Babelfish to translate potiguaya from Espanol into English and it said that it meant " potiguaya." I think them Etymologists been smokin too many fish. The Spanish for leaf is hoja, I dunno what poti is in either language. I mean the Spanish for marijuana is ...marijuana. Heh hehhehe that's funny cause see some people call it maryjane because, see maryjane and marijua... oh I guess it isn't that funny. So why is it called marijuana? Who the heck is she?
