It would be too hard to define smart to give you a truly accurate answer. I would say the person with the most respect for their intelligence is probably Stephen Hawkins.

As far as knowledge on a wide variety of subjects it would have to be Ken Jennings by a landslide. Mr Jeopardy is a mastermind.

Intelligence is not a linear measure. There are many different kinds of intelligence, and many different ways people choose to use their intelligence; including ways that many not be obvious, and may not make someone reach celebrity status.

You know that guy that has that job nobody knows what he does, the one with the house that seems to never need repair, the guy whos car always runs and lawn is perpetually mowed yet you never see him behind a mower. The guy who is always smiling, whom everybody knows yet nobody is ever over. The guy who is always on the phone yet nobody seems to know his number. The guy who never had to throw out an appliance or piece of furniture. The guy who the repairman never has to visit. That guy who seems to take 18 weeks vacation a year. The guy who discovered the secret to living the happy life yet never seems to share it with anyone. That man is the smartest person alive.
