Yes, the few we have went to we were able to get a couple units very cheap and made quite a bit of money off the contents. We were able to verbally bid with the other people. My aunt in Michigan has had a lot of success with them. However in MI she has to put in a written sealed bid and highest one gets it. Good Luck.

When you go, it's really a hit or miss kind of thing. You have to ask yourself - "If the stuff was so great, why did they not pay for it?" So - most of the time it's okay stuff that you can resell, some of the time you get junk like used furniture and old toys - and a very small percent of the time you hit the jackpot.

My next door neighbor bought a house and supported his family for many years by buying items at self-storage auctions, and selling them at the week-end swap-meet. There are often good bargains there. Sometimes people store their parents belongings in those, and they when the folks pass away, the family simply abandons the stuff. My son and his wife stored everything they owned in a facility when they lost their jobs, and when they moved on to a job in another city, they were too embarrassed to ask us for help, and abandoned their belongings. I know one case when a man committed suicide, his distraught wife put everything in storage and abandoned it. The stories are endless.
