  • Check the contents of your /etc/resolv.conf file to make sure that your nameservers are listed properly. Use the `man resolv.conf` command to find the format of that file.
  • Make sure your nsswitch.conf reflects dns then files. Also make sure your resolv.conf has your name servers. It should also have entries for you domain.

  • I am assuming that when you say you cant ping the XP machines by name that when you ping by name an IP is not even resolved? IF this be the case it has nothing to do with firewalls on the clients. I would make sure you have the domain suffix set properly on your linux machines or atleast have your windows domain name in the search order suffix list on your linux boxes. This is of course assuming that you have configured your linux machines to point to the win2k3 DNS servers. Since MS DNS server solution does not allow you to be specific on rights for recursion there should not be any related settings required on the DNS server to allow the clients to use them for lookups. -s
