I don't use those abbreviations because I think it makes people look unintelligent and lazy. It doesn't take much time to type out "Thank you" or "Please."
-
Because that is considered chatspeak and is, in my opinion, a bit rude to use in a general forum. If you are going to talk to people, you use language that the majority comprehends. Not something that ends up looking like gobbledygook to them.
-
We do, but not in the questions and answers. We use them mostly in the comments. ;p
-
cos we fear the wrath of bob blaylock.
-
Because there is no urgency about getting your questions or answers submitted, so you have time to compose them in a way that they can be understood by anybody without having to do a mental translation. There are members from countries all around the world and English isn't the first language for some of them. Text language would make it even more difficult for them.

I think a better question might be, "Why do some ABers use those rude little indecipherable texting shortcuts?". (I don't like the use of those. Does it show?)
-
Because some ABers are internet illiterate, ( ME ) Heck I have a difficult enough time (since my spelling and gramar SUCK,) using regular language let alone learn a new language,..! Sorry, no way !

2 stp AB lkin lyk ths.

Because they are not "internet" symbols, they are mobile phone txt symbols. When there is one writer and one reader, and writing is difficult because it is on a mobile keypad, such shorthands. But when there is one writer with a full qwerty keyboard and hundreds if not thousands of readers, the tiny saving of effort by the writer is not worth the small inconvenience to all those readers. Thirty years ago, computers tended to use such shorthands because of limitations in the technology at that time, and fifty years ago journalists did the same. Some people think it looks cool to use them. I find it looks very, very dated. Think bobby socks and greased quiffs - that is when these abbreviations belong
-
and.. we are usually very smart people, who know proper english i suppose.
-
Because even if some do use them, many don't understand them. So if you want to get your questions understood by the most, it is better not to use them. Even if users understand them, they often make your questions more difficult to read, and eventually annoying. There are a lot of different people on Answerbag, and many of them don't have this background. I regularly use a few emoticons, but sometimes, they are not understood: :-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticon
