  • The term midnight originally refered to the halfway point between sunset and sunrise. However, the term is often applied to the clock and when used in that sense, it refers to the last minute of the day, which is silly since it is called "MIDnight" as in middle, but is really the END of the night, followed at 12:01 as the first minute of the morning.
  • I believe "midnight" is the beginning of the day... 12 am. Look at it this way... if you celebrate New Years and you stay up until "midnight" do you say Happy New Year, or do you say Happy Last Year? I say Happy New Year. Meaning that "midnight" (12 am Jan 1st) is the beginning of the day.
  • For me it depends whether I'm in The UK or Spain and in the UK midnight is already past the end but in Spain the night is young. It's a bit like 'is your glass half-empty or half-full?' Personally - it's the beginning as I hate endings so much and don't believe in them anyway, because when one door closes another door opens...
  • Well, it's mid night, so must be the end of the day.
  • I always thought midnight was the middle of the night. mid--night
