My old 304 developed several symptoms at the same time: it ran louder, a tapping noise came from the left rear of the block, and major backfiring during deceleration. What’s the most likely cause?

    Well, it seems I can answer my own question: it's all due to a broken/leaky gasket where the left header meets the engine.
