It really doesn't matter to me, just as long as I get a great cheese sandwhich, that's fine with me.

Butter both sides and place the cut side with the cheese. The crust will take care of itself and get all toasty.

My choice is to put the butter on the crust side..

I usually use the end pieces for making croutons, but if I had to use them for a grilled cheese sandwich, I would butter the outside, assuming that you are making the sandwich in a frying pan (wouldn't that make it a fried cheese sandwich?) I prefer to broil my grilled cheese sandwiches; I make them open-faced, of course.

I butter and put the cheese on the soft side not the crust side :)

I put the crusty side on the cheese.
