Possibly because they don't get along with their family and their friends act more like family than they do.

My good friend does this. I think it is because she knows that her family is always going to be there, because they have no choice. Her friends choose to be her friends. Her parents can't choose to be her parents. If she treats her friends poorly, she will not have any left. She can be a bitch to her parents because they are stuck with her!

You can choose your friends. You cannot choose your family. Me personally, my friends treat me better than my family does. I just return the kindness.
