Most likely is a chemical imbalance in the brain, followed by stress, and personal relationship problems.

The biggest cause of depression that our brains (particularly its stress coping mechanisms) are designed for occasional intermittent stresses (e.g. running into a predator). But modern life is a near-constant set of low-level stressors that can gradually wear down the brain's capacity to cope, causing neurological imbalances that manifest as depression, bipolar disorder, etc. http://www.amazon.com/Against-Depression-Peter-D-Kramer/dp/B000OFOUN4/

It is caused by and has emerged as an epidemic due chemical imbalances from the lack of opportunity to exercise. Only 110 years ago, not enough time to evolve as humans, our bodies had to walk, lift, run and do manual labor and have diets that did not contain preservatives and we were not invited to sit motionless so much as we are today (i.e. desk jobs and watching televison). The number one universal remedy that doctors prescribe for depression is exercise. I can tell you that it works too. But it so hard to find time to exercise in our daily lives. Make time for exercise and avoid proessed foods is the answer. Reduce the sludge of toxins in your body. A happy liver will give you more energy and better moods. After all, depression is largely no energy (lethargy) and moodiness. I would add too that our society not being as social as it once was can make us feel isolated (i.e. banks want us to use ATMs and not meet the tellers inside, self-checkout at grocery, online anonymity). We are disconnecting as a human race. Also, computer screen ions have been suspect in contributing to sadness. Get away from the computer and television. Either it is the ions or perhaps the inactivity while sitting and watching televison or being online.

other people, and the way they behave toward you. Some people can be so meanspirited and unkind so as to cause some one to be depressed about themselves.
