Saying things you shouldn't, such as betraying a confidence and/or talking about things you really don't know much or anything about.

It meant telling tales, snitching, or ratting out someone. It now means speaking outside one's competence.
"Talking out of school" or "telling tales out of school" is tattling.

To me it means saying something you shouldn't be saying...some things should be kept private, within a particular group..if you divulge things that went on inside the group (family, whatever) to outsiders, then you are "talking out of school"! :)
