In a 5 inning game, if the starting pitcher only pitches 3 innings and the relief pitcher pitches 2 innings, and the team stayed in the lead the whole game and won, who gets the win and who gets the save?

The relief pitcher would get the win. In order to get the win, the starting pitcher must pitch at least four innings of a five inning game. There would be no save credited. 10.17 Winning And Losing Pitcher (b) If the pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead, is a starting pitcher who has not completed... (2) four innings of a game that lasts five innings on defense, then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.

Under present rules, the reliever would get the win and nobody would get a save. Under my proposed change, the starter would get the win because he got nine outs and the reliever only six outs. the reliever would get the save if the lead at the end of the third inning is three runs or less. Peter
