I don't know what you mean by thicker line. Maybe you are talking about Cat 3 VS Cat 5... But if Its the same internet, it wouldn't matter.

By the use of the word "Dial up" I think you mean regular old fashioned modem. Yes a thicker cable could provide faster transmission, but not because the speed is faster. Thicker Phone cables could have better shielding and therefore less interruptions from outside influences, like electromagnetic fluxes. Since each packet of data is checked for accuracy the fewer failed packets means the data gets to where it's going the first time more often. So even at the same modem speed your transmission time is quicker. I could explain how the packets do this, but I think you just want to know if buying a shielded phone cord for Modem use is worth it. Yes it is. But remember that once the cable ends at the wall its just unshielded wires routing past hot and cold water pipes and AC voltage wires and maybe cable TV wires. You might find that transmission speeds are better in certain rooms because the lines are close to the junction box tot he phone company. Good luck experimenting.
