"Haut couture" has been adopted into the English language from French. It translates literally, and very badly, as 'high seams', but it means 'high fashion'. 'Haut' or high can be used in a variety of ways, including in the context of one being 'superior' to another or 'higher' on the social ladder. 'Couture', by itself, is used to suggest 'haut couture', but, if the outfit is truly outlandish, it could mean 'bas couture'. What does it mean? It is supposed to mean that the outfit is something special and better than the cheap knock-offs sold at Wal-Mart. It might also mean that someone paid a large sum of money for something no one else would be found dead in. I can hear the fashion police knocking at the door.
