Everything controversial about China... its pollution, its stance on certain political issues, its political allies, its human rights offences... these were all known about before Beijing was awarded the 2008 Olympics. So at this late stage, I don't see how they could have any effect whatsoever, apart from maybe whether the pollution is so bad it will affect the athletes' performance... but even in that case it would be a level playing field, so who cares.
