Not all places on the earth's surface have the same atmospheric pressure. There are areas of high pressure and areas of low pressure. In the northern hemisphere air in a high pressure circulates clockwise and in low pressure systems it circulates anti-clockwise. In the southern hemisphere these directions are reversed. Wind is caused by the air in an area of high pressure being forced into an area of low pressure. There can also be localised winds caused by the fact that the land heats up and cools down faster than the sea. Sea breezes are caused when the land heats up and the air above it is also heated causing it to rise. Cooler air from the sea rushes in to replace it. The opposite can happen at night as the land cools and the air is forced out to the sea - this is called a land breeze.
