  • From my experience, the xbox does have to be chipped in order to play backed up games. The ability to play certain games and audio CD's also depends on the dvd drive in your particular xbox and the brand/type of media used to burn it. I have found that RW media (cd-rw and dvd+rw) work best in my xbox 1.0. Although it is technically illegal, I see nothing wrong with backing up games that you have purchased as so that if the original were to become scratched or otherwise unplayable, the user would not be out another $50. • First off to play any games that are burnt you need to have a modded Xbox, then not all Xbox dvd-roms read burnt dvds or cds. The Samsung one reads about everything, you can determine if it's a samsung if the cd tray had 2 aditional holes in it, if it doesn't it should be a thompson which sometimes reads everything, and sometimes reads only some higher quality cdr and dvdr. Then again you can do a mod on the dvd-rom that might enable it to read everything. You can find the tutorials for the pot mod on xbox-scene.com
