ABSOLUTELY! Go see the slums of Asia or Haiti - mankind is not easily dismissed by death, disease, hunger or want. : )

I am not as certain as I once was..and neither are a lot of major scientists...see Stephen Hawking's latest speech on this.

Mankind creates the chaos, so if mankind starts to die out, the level of chaos will drop to a level where mankind can probably survive after all. It is quite possible we are living beyond our means right now, or at least destroying the means for future generations to live in the same fashion we do today, and some kind of "backwards" progress in our lifestyles/numbers may result from this several hundred years in the future, but mankind will certainly adapt and survive. There's nothing like the prospect of death to focus the mind.
