It is for a sufferer of Chronic Fatigue syndrome. No matter how long you sleep, you still feel tired when you wake up.

Definitely not. It is not certain exactly what it does, but sleep, and a reasonable quantity of it, is definitely necessary for ordinary brain function. Lack of sleep causes brain function to fall off. Severe sleep deprivation can cause psychiatric problems, and in extreme cases death. It seems likely that sleep allows memories to be consolidated. In a recent experiment two groups were taught something new. One group had a short sleep, the other did some undemanding task. Neither group was actually short of sleep. On retesting a few hours later, the group who had the nap performed significantly better than those that had not. The name seemed in some way to "fix" the learning.
