  • That's a debatable question. There are three actions that stand out in Kelly's life. In April 1878, a police officer called Fitzpatrick accused Ned's mother of attacking him and Ned of shooting him in the wrist. It is beleived that Fitzpatrick brought on the attack by assaulting one of Ned's sisters. But whatever actually happened, the end result of Fitzpatrick's claims was that Mrs. Kelly was sent to prison for three years and a one hundred pound reward was offered for the capture of Ned. The fight that was the most serious that the Kelly's commited was the shooting of Sergeant Kennedy and Constables Scanlon, Lonigan and McIntyre on the 25th October 1878. I think in playing out that act, the police who where murdered became famous. It's interesting to read that Sergeant Kennedy was shot twice by Kelly, and as he lay dieing, asked Kelly to "finish him off" Five days later a police search party found Kennedy's body, covered with his overcoat, as Ned had left it. Constables Scanlon and Lonigan where killed, but McIntyre survived to report the murders. The "Siege of Glenrowan" (26th - 28th June 1880) was the end of the line for the Kelly gang and saw the most bloodshed. I think most people would remember this as Neds greatest stand. By now there was a huge reward for the capture of Ned Kelly, although Ned had a large group of supports who stuck with him until he met with the hangman's noose in November 11 1880.
