  • I think that you should, simply because it is a sign of respect, and you don't want people to misconstrue you action as a sign of disrespect to their country. People can get very angry or offended when patriotism comes into question.
  • Yes. I would be offended if someone from another country didn't stand when America's national anthem is being played.
  • "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." If others present stand, so should you. Note that not all cultures regard standing for national anthems, flags, etc. as necessary, or not doing so as a sign of disrespect - it depends on the country. I don't think anyone will intrepret your gesture of respect for a foreign anthem or flag as a being disloyal to your own. When the president or other high dignitaries travel abroad they always do - at least in public situations.
  • Yes. It is considered the polite thing to do.
  • In the Army, when in uniform, we salute our national anthem. We stand at attention when the national anthem of another country is played. I've personally extended the gesture to other national anthems even out of uniform.
  • Everyone needs to stand for the pledge as well as the national anthem of that nation. It is simply a sign of respect. There is no need to sing along, it offers no obligations, but it is simply respect.
  • I believe it is common coutesy and respect to do so, no matter what the country. Others stand for our national anthem. We need to give them the same consideration.
  • Yeah why not? But make sure everyone else is standing first, otherwise you'll look kinda stupid.
  • I think its only polite when youre a guest in another country to stand for their anthem.
  • Actually in some countries and cultures you could find yourself in a lot of official trouble for not showing "due" respect. In a country that is a monarchy, the national anthem is usually a tribute to the Monarch of the nation, and therefore disrespect amounts to les majeste. I would imagine that most cultures would recognize any such disrespectful behaviour on the part of a foreigner more as ignorance than intentional disrespect. I do know of local cases where foreigners have been corrected by competant authority and then reacted badly to them ... long jail time, and when lucky deportation as persona non grata. 'Tain't like the good ol' US of A :-))
  • politeness and respect YES !!!
  • Yes I would (unless I was held prisoner of course) ~ and would hope for same when visitors come to our country.
