When a soda goes flat, is it just the carbonation that goes flat or does every ingredient get flat? Does the caffeine lose its potency?

The only thing that happens is that the carbonic acid, which is what makes it taste good, turns back into carbon dioxide because carbon dioxide only turns into carbonic acid under pressure, and the carbon dioxide evaporates because its natural state is to be a gas, rather than dissolved in water. Everything else stays the same. The same thing is true of beer. You can refresh flat soda or beer with club soda. I also use half club soda in fruit juice to cut the calories and improve the taste. Fortunately, where I live, it comes in recyclable seltzer bottles.

I'd go easy on using Club soda to refresh a flat beverage as there is often a lot of other things in it, like sodium. I don't like what it does to other drinks. I'd rather be more careful closing up my bottles or buy smaller bottles that won't go flat.

Club Soda, which is usually sold sodium free contrary to what Galeanda said, is a great way to refreshen flat sodas.
