  • Perhaps there are several factors at work. First, everyone has a 'subjective' pain threshold, regardless of reason. That said, perhaps your gums and teeth are ultra sensitive, especially if you have gum retraction and/or gum disease. Personally, I have a hard time at the dentist office, not the least of which are for the above reasons. The other is that I was literally traumatized when 6 years old during my first dental visit. 'They' -- the dentists -- say this accounts for a lot of perceived pain from post-traumatic stress, the pain is not only emotionally real but presents physically as well (thanks to the brain!). When I go, I HAVE TO HAVE not only the shots and then some, but also insist on nitrous as well. I figure 'this can't hurt,' especially since they demand people to stay on oxygen until clear! Okay by me, that's for sure!
