Would it be wrong of me to ask for help here in trying to find an old friend that I lost touch with - I would have to, naturally, write their name...would that be unethical here?

Go for it... the worst that could happen is you get flagged -- but make sure you give people contact information for you -- I would be willing to reveal your information to a friend, but I would not be willing to reveal my friends information to you. That way the friend has the choice to contact you or not.

Please take no offense. Answerbag is not the lost and found department. I believe answering your question, concerning your old friend, would deviate from the purpose of Answerbag. Soon, every person in the world, would be asking the same questions and Answerbag would be no more. I understand your question, but Answerbag is not the website for that type of question.
