Why does it ask for your birthday on the My Settings page if it doesn't show up anywwhere on your public profile?

Statistics, statistics, statistics. They'll probably use it eventually OR maybe serve age-specific ads.

To know your age. They keep log according to age,sex,etc. of the members I guess.

Perhaps the staff want to send you a birthday card. More likely to be what Eli suggested though and you don't have to provide it if you don't want to.

It may also be one way they keep tabs of you if you try to log in with different accounts. Or if you lost your password and they want proof it's you.
