Wow! I had been on welfare at one time, and I didn't get nearly that with three kids! And I had to pay my rent out of what I got!

Every state is different. The numbers I've known people to recieve is about 700 a month for a family of four. But that was a few years ago. I am astounded at the numbers you gave for Ireland. There are subsidy programs in the US in which your rent depends on your income. I was in subsidised housing in Maine for 2 years, and it was 30 percent of my income, minus a flat amount per dependent. I believe that amount was 80 dollars, but it was a long time ago and I'm not sure.
