I have never been to a dojo that did not interview every potential student, looking for the right type, and any martial arts school that does NOT do this, should not be allowed to continue operating. A martial arts school offers deadly skills ... I feel that the first interview screens out the people who would misuse this deadly skill, and is therefore needed. I feel it is very fair that all potential students be refused or accepted as students, based on their first interview results (as well as continuing and ongoing frequent tests to confirm the student is still worthy of further instruction).

My experience is that a truly 'good' Dojo will accept anybody initially. That is because a true Sensei or sahbonim will be of the mindset that if you joined for the wrong reasons, it is his duty and responsibility to motivate you to stay for the right reasons. It does not take long to discern wether it's going to work or not - and in some cases it can be a considerable time before the 'seed' brings a person back - and in the meantime one is not going to learn anything that will enable them to be any more potentially dangerous skill-wise than when they first arrived. It's trite but true - 'No bad students, only bad teacher' By the way, and only so I cn qualify myself to answer this important question, I hold higher Black Belts in two seperate disciplines and still help out as a volunteer at some of the local Martial Arts academies.
