Where do the political terms "left wing" and "right wing" originate?

During the early moderate period of the French Revolution(1791), factions began to form in the National Assembly. To show their solidarity with each other, these factions would sit together. As it happened, the monarchists and constitutional monarchists ended up sitting on the right side of the house, and the more radical revolutionists on the left. Right and Left became the shorthand for these factions and their political/ideological positions. Exactly when 'wing' was added is still a little contentious, but it had become common political parlance by the mid-19th century, and was usually used to designated political divisions within a single organisation rather than between organisations.
