  • to cover a large area over your tent and dig channels around it to divert water from your tent...but this was for winter camping in the mountains with heavy rain/snow falls...
  • When winter camping in the snow, don't 'walk' on your knees in the tent. walk on the flat of yur lower leg, the whole thing, so you don't put a huge pothole where you;ll be sleeping later. Think FLAT! And carry a metal clipboard as a snow shovel and a flat surface to roll out your tortillas and use your aluminum fuel bottle as the rolling pin and you too can have fresh flour tortillas in the mountains:-) Biggest tip is probably that just about everything must serve double duty or it's not coming on the trip.
  • This is a trick I learned from my son, an Eagle Scout. He had to do this to receive a higher rank. They were without any tent, blankets, parkas, whatsoever. It was very, very cold at night. He had to go out alone: Let's first assume that you have the whetherall to build a fire. Okay: Build a RECTANGULAR fire, placing a plethora of rocks first under it. Let the fire burn all the way down to ashes. Throw dirt or sand over the top of the ashes. You NOW HAVE a warm place to sleep! Amazing, eh?
  • Sleep close or take a R.V.
