  • You can get something called T-cut in the UK, probably something similar in the US. It's a lquid that basically acts as a mild abrasive, allowing you to wipe off areas of rust. Most shops that deal with cars sell it (e.g. Halfords in the UK). Otherwise, ask someone at such a shop for advice, they may be able to recommend some sort of coating that resists rust. You can also use it for small scratches, as it works by spreading paint form the surrounding areas over the scratch. However, this obviously makes the paint work a tiny bit thinner, so it's probably not advisable if you have got multiple paint jobs under the current one.
