I'm conflicted on the idea of scanning for Down's Syndrome. There is no cure for Down's Syndrome, so the only reason to know whether or not your fetus has Down's Syndrome is to decide whether or not to terminate the pregnancy. Thus, you have a couple who want a baby, just not one with Down's Syndrome. It's one thing to decide, "I'm not ready for a baby. I don't want to be pregnant." It is another to say, "I want a baby, just not this one. This one isn't good enough." (This is what is being done in India and China based upon the sex of the fetus.) I think it should be entirely up to the couple, and even then I'm not sure what I think.

It is in tune with socialized medicine, some corners will start getting cut, then big corners will get cut. take a look at Cuba if you want a vision of socialized medicine. To answer the question, it is a terrible thing.
