this is what my grandpa tells me its dirt, mixed with dried skin cells ergg eww

The skin of knees and elbows are generally devoid of oil glands. That is why it gets dry so fast and the reason elbows and knees get dark.
-
If you think about it, the skin at elbows, knees and underarms have to stretch quite a ways so they can get darker looking when the skin is not stretched -- like when you straigthen out your arm, the elbow skin wrinkles because it is compressed and the pigmentation in the skin compresses together.

Dark pigmentation on the elbows and knees is NOT dirt. It's a mixture of calloused and hyperpigmented skin... For dirt to be accumulated only on someone's elbows or knees is a stupid idea. Some people are more prone to this skin condition than others. It seems to occur predominately with people of color and even many people of color do not have this condition. I personally suffer from it, my hygiene is impeccable,I DO keep my elbows and knees moisturized, and, for me,the condition worsens in the summer months when UV rays become the strongest and my elbows become almost black. Saying that the condition results from dirt is a racial remark, in my opinion... It's like reasoning that the sun-burned, peeling lesions and skin that some fair Caucasian people experience in the summer is because of herpes sores [so said my "grandpappy"]. Think before you make ignorant, hurtful remarks.
