Help answer this question below.
Great question. The answer is no. The amount of oil your skin produces depends on your skin type. Some people have naturally oily, sebaceous skin; other people have dry, flaky, sensitive skin.
Washing your face less would not decrease the amount of oil produced. It's best to modify your skin care regimen to fit your skin type. If you are oily, then use more toners, cleansers, etc. If you are dry, then avoid soaps or scrubs that can make your skin more sensitive and irritated.
I think the skin has it's own pace of oil production and I don't think we can change it. We can dry our skin in varying degrees with different products or things. So your oil production would stay the same even if you never washed, but the skin cells and dirt that does hang on would not be removed and your skin would be scaly in a gross way.
I can only speak for my own experience and my childrens.
But when we use soap our skin dries out, gets itchy and bleeds if we continue to use soap.
We use alternatives available from the chemist which are soap free.

You're reading Does the skin's oil production increase to counter us washing in soap all the time? if so, would oil production decrease a lot if I never washed, leaving the skin naturally oily?

Thanks!. Good answer, although it seems unusual that the skin would continually produce oil, even when convered in it. I first thought it should reach a natural equilirium ( unique for everyone of course), because if humans didnt wash it off for a month, the build up would be quite unhealthy.
