Why do some people make a moaning sound when they yawn?

my hubby yawns and makes this funny sound.... we will be singing at church together and for all three stanzas he will yawn at the same spot.. it's precious... i love it.

I don't know. I never suddenly feel the urge to MOAN LOUDLY when I yawn. Others, like my dad, do that and it peeves me.

Maybe it's so everyone else knows its just a yawn. Instead of like how animals will open their mouth wide to show power, dominance etc, we make the sound so people don't get scared off. Social experiment. When you yawn next time, do it without making a sound. If someone looks in your direction, give them the evil eye and bare some teeth.

I do it most of the time also. Even my youngest cat moans when he yawns. I guess it feels good to let some noise out.

My guess would be the same reason a person *sighs* after relieving your constipation...its a comfort thing ...not that I've done that or anything...

Anthropologists reckon yawning is one of the first forms of communication between humans. Have you ever noticed when you yawn whilst with a group of people some others will also yawn withour realising it? Maybe the sound is part of it too, and the person making the sound is unconciously communicatin with those around them? IMHO that is.
