To be on the safe side turn off the junkbox. that way if someone by accident turns on the switch you wouldn't get electriqued.

simply shutting the light switch off will not cut the power flowing through the lines I learned this the hard way Shut the power from the junction box off first unless you feel you need a change in hairstyle lol

Turning the light switch off doesn't mean there isn't any juice through the wire. You need to turn off the power at the breaker. And then test it with a juice tester to make sure or you may get a big surprise.

I turn the light switch only when I'm installing fans with NO remote control but I don't touch the wires, I simply get them together and use a wire nut. Presto! For remote control fans I do shut the electrical box off. Here's why., there's a flow of electrical current always active, when installing those units with remote the receiver cannot be fed any electricity while you do the grounding or you will burn the fan's RF receiver which mean you void the warranty. Another negative side of doing this is YOU ARE the ground between the juction box and the electrical current. Metal ladder + metal ceiling fan + live wires with sweaty hands= not a good idea.
