I'm trying to sell something and I looked at our local newspaper on how much it is to advertise but its too much for my blood, is there any way I can advertise that's close to free or really cheap?

use CraigsList. If you don't know the website, get to know it! www.craigslist.com. Half the stuff I own is off that site.

There are tons of free classifieds online -- just put "classifieds" in a search engine. Craigslist is a good one but refuse to deal with anyone other than IN PERSON IN CASH.

I'd try ebay and/or craigs list.

Sometimes the newspapers have cheaper rates if you advertise at certain times or if the items are under
a particular amount. Also, community newspapers are
    pretty cheap.

If people want to sell something they put a for sale card in local shop windows and it costs pennies.
