With a good teacher I would say two to four weeks.

i took 3 lessons then my instructor told me i didnt need any more and to get my theory past and then book the practical. i think from starting the lessons to taking the test was about 7 weeks, sadly i failed for being in 4th gear going down a hill instead of 3rd(kinda stupid i thought cos i did everything else to perfection) i put in for the practical again and passed even with a real bad nose bleed half way through that didnt end until the test was over, i was kinda driving with my head back and gargling on the blood cos i didnt wanna have to stop and pay to take it again. all in all i think it was around 3-4 months (long time ago now) oh and this was in the UK i think its alot quicker and easier in the USA

Seeing as I'm in Europe I learnt to drive manual, which takes a bit longer to learn. I must say that I've been obsessed with cars since I was 5 so I knew a lot of the theory behind everything before I started driving. Eventhough I'm in Switzerland and the driving exams are really difficult, I took 6 lessons over a period of a month. The lessons merely served to prepare me for the exams as I had already practiced quite a bit using my learner's permit. All in all I would say the average person would take around 2 months. In Germany for example you are not allowed to drive without a full licence, the only experience you get is from driving with an instructor and I believe the minimum hours is 18. The instructor determines when you are ready to take the exam. It's not hard to learn how to drive, it's just hard to remember all the small details about the rules, and there are so many of them in Europe.

I first learned to drive as a teen, but it was just off-road and it took maybe 10 minutes. Then many years later I needed to get a license so I had two lessons, one with my husband and one with a friend who showed me how to park and then went in and aced the written test and passed the driving test.

I was old enough to get a licence in July and I passed my test in September of the same year, but I had been driving on private roads for three years.
