Air Force is a bit more posh than Army. AF personnel assigned to Army posts get paid a bonus because Army barracks are not up to AF standards. Aside from that, it's like living on a college campus. The barracks are dorms and the unit buildings are like classroom buildings.

Living on an army base is not bad at all. My fiance lives on one, and I go over there all the time. It's really laid back there, it's kind of like college. You get a roomate, and most guys pretty much party and drink the day away over there.

Living on the base is alright at times because it is self contained. We had pizza parlors, laudromats, grocery stores, beauty parlors, a hospital, police station, many chow halls, a liquor store, post office, used car lot, etc. When I was in the air force our main thing to worry about was becoming a "barracks rat". Airmen (female and male enlisted folks) who don't budget their money well end up having to sit around on the base drinking beer or whatever they can get. If you budget your money, base life is a whole lot better because you have choices.

i'm quite sure it hasn't changed much since i got out, the air force dorms are far better to be in than any other branch. first of all, we usually don't have a cq (charge of quarters, aka-babysitter) at night or on weekends like the other branches because we're generally better behaved. second, air force generally has better food than the army or marines, it's about equal or just below the navy. third, air force usually has better mwr (morale/welfare/recreation) supplies than the other branches, including billeting (basically a military hotel) near resort areas! yeah, join the air force, we got it all ;)

I'll echo everybody else and praise most bases, especially the big ones, for quality of life. The little bases though can get pretty boring.

All of the comments are correct on the dorms. But if you are getting a house, you will need to be aware of some things. Everyone will know your business, unless you just don't tell them. (then the rumors fly) The houses I've lived in over the 8 moves have been alright, but a little "worn". There will be an inspection before you move out. The service members rank & name is posted on the door. At 5pm the National Anthem plays and you MUST stop and face the flag. When you live on base, you are very aware of RANK and where you fit in the pecking order. The good things about base is everything you need is there and within walking/biking distance. You'll know a lot of people by name and they will remember you. You don't have to worry about electric or gas bills. You have to ask yourself, "how private of a person am I?" If you are a social butterfly, you will have a BALL.

I can guarantee you that Air Force bases for the most part have much better living conditions. The base i am currently on is in the process of building brand new dorms and remodeling the ones that are only about 15 yrs old.

Pretty much what everyone else said. But you'll have to remember if you get a house, to keep your lawn mowed. And you'll be amazed how much time money and effort, folks devote to getting the house of the month award.
