Why do we have to open the shades when the plane is taking off or landing?

Visibility in case of an emergency. If for any reason an emergency were to develop on takeoff or landing, having the shades up provides a view to the outside conditions. If there were to be a fire, water or other danger/obstacle outside, you would not want to evacuate into it!
