Over-hand serves are much more powerful but when you're first starting out, under-hand serves are much easier. During the tryouts talk to some of the older girls on the team they'll be more than happy to show you.

Don't worry too much as long as you can consistantly get it over the net your setting skills will make up for your week serve

Keep attempting to serve overhand. Underhand is easier, but overhand will be harder to pickup later. If you are right handed, put your left hand palm up directly in front of you. Swing your right hand from the top and clap your left hand, without moving the left hand. Try to make a loud clapping sound with your hands. Think of the motion as a crocodile mouth. I coached volleyball for three years, and this is how I made good servers become great servers. Keep doing the motions without a ball. You'll be able to serve in no time.
