When it comes to jewelry costing under 500 bucks, it comes down to your eye. If you think it is a good looking piece, and is worth the aesthetic boost it will give you to wear it, then it is worth it. If you really question the purchase, chances are it isn't.

I think so. Garnets are semi-precious and relatively cheap. Sterling silver is cheap. So, you have to determine how much you want to pay for the "custom" part.
