Sure seems like it, and, it also seems like sometimes there is a very fine line between the two.

No. Both of them represent strong emotion. The opposite/other extreme to strong emotion is sheer apathy (lack of emotion/caring).

I think for a certain type of love, hate is the other extreme. But I think there is another type of love that is all encompassing and has no opposite.

Nah. Actually, there is a thin line between love and hate. They just seem like extremes, because both can be so intense. I'm more willing to bet that a more accurate opposite extremes would be love/hate to total indifference. Polar opposites!

No as they can be on the same plain. Not all hate is bad. I can love goodness and hate badness. I can love truth and hate lying. And so many other things.

No, the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference.

They are the two extremes of the same emotion, you can't hate someone unless you're passionately involved in some way and its similar with love too. To me, they are halves of the same coin, they go together. There are, however, different forms of love which lack the necessary passion to turn into hate. So, we need to be specific i.e 'passionate' love/hate.
