  • Some teenagers experience more in their shorter life than some adults ever have. Even so, while experience contributes to insight, so does observance. If you have seen others and have seen through them what has worked and what has not, you can learn there. Become better yourself in that way. This goes for anyone. I'd say if you want to at least sound intelligable read up in the news, remember that it's not always true what you hear, but you at least know what's going on in the world. Actually, reading self help books without having a problem can gain you insight as to what to do if a problem ever arose.
  • Well my general observation about wisdom is that it works sort of like this: life is like a school... it's constantly trying to teach us something. It's actually very efficient -- many of the lessons are painful, and there's a lot of cause-and-effect built-in to the curriculum. Those who realize this and pay close attention to the lessons learn a lot very quickly. The main problem is that mostly we DON'T pay attention to the lessons: we spend most of our time caught up in our thinking -- ruminating about the past, or spinning around in self-centered fantasies, or speculating about future scenarios which aren't very likely to occur, etc. Anything except for "be here now", which just seems intensely dull and boring. So instead of learning our lessons, we learn how to AVOID our lessons: how to minimize discomfort without actually learning how things work. This results in a "general numbness" -- a sense that life hasn't really started yet, that something is missing, or something fundamental is "wrong" with life. All that avoidance becomes a kind of personal shell or firewall that keeps pain out, but also prevents us from being able to experience being fully alive. So wise people have learned this: they've learned that it's better to face the moment-to-moment unpleasantness in life and learn than to pull back in their shells and avoid. A few even learn this during adolescence.
