Yes, it is not uncommon for dogs to have allergies. This is most often manifested by dry skin, scratching, and sometimes a fine bumpy rash. Most often allergies are caused by sensitivity to "over the counter" commercial dog food. Any "natural" or speciality pet food store has dog food specifically for allergic dogs. It may take a little experimentation to find out what food blend suits your dog, and the food is usually a bit more expensive. A good store will assist you and even give you samples of some foods to try. It's worth it in the long run... you will have a happier dog with a beautiful coat. Your Vet may also have some suggestions for you too.

Yes, but it's not always related to food. Our German Shepherd mix is allergic to dust mites, mold mites, and sage brush weed. She would sleep with her head under our bed and wake up with very swollen ears and bumps under her skin. Our Vet did a blood test, about $250 and had her tested for allergens specific to our area. So now we have a cleaner house! Our Vet said a sign of food allergy is biting/chewing on the paws.

Yes dogs have allergies, I own a bird dog who is a walking giant rash. His skin turns bright red with bumps, his hair begins to fall out, his eyes swell up, and he gets a stinky smell ( and continues to smell no matter how many baths he gets). We were told by the vet that many dogs are allergic to air born allergies just like humans (rag-weed, pollen, etc). and was all so allergic too food, both human and dog. Like milk or dairy products in general, weat and oats, etc. and we were told many of the dog food you buy at the store can contain EXTRA ingredients that dogs can be allergic to. (what kind of EXTRAS.. i dont know). But we were also told that the allergies came from the dogs parents so if yours is allergie prone then DONT bred them. We've taken to making our own dog food. we boil rabit, beef, chicken, or whatever meat you think they would like, when the meats done use the drippings to cook the veggies.. try carrots, peas, cellery, and throw in yams or potatos. mix it all together with some rice and see if they break out. if its airborn alllergies then see the vet, ours gave him an anti-histamine shot, but it wore-off within 2 weeks and cost us like $120.

Yes dogs do have allergies, and it is usually food. My dog is allergic to grass and who knows what else she has ben on these steroid pills that prevent her from breaking otu into itchy sores and u get a lot for your money. If ur doggy is having problems take him/her to the vet and see hwat he can do for you.

We have done the vet, the vet dermatologist, the injections, the steroids, the medicated baths, the different trials on various foods. I now homecook for GiGi and it has made a world of difference. She still has itching but it's not as bad and her skin and coat have cleared up considerably. Good luck. You are just going to have to figure it out by trial and error, because what one dog is allergic to is what another loves. It's hard and will take some time and much patience.
