I think ti comes from the idea of someone fooling around, not being serious.

Fool around. Horse around - Engage in horse play. Play around. (In the sense of childish behavior, physical exhuberant play.) There's also "monkey around with" which is "tinkering" in the sense of, say, an amateur adjusting the controls of a carburetor, not really knowing how to do it properly, but monkeying around with the settings by trial and error. Those are both un-serious physical activities, a bit randomized ... but one sense is juvelnile play, and the other is less-than-scientific exploration. http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/24/messages/276.html monkey around - do random, unplanned work or activities or spend time idly; "The old lady is usually mucking about in her little house" http://www.thefreedictionary.com/monkey+around http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/phrasal-verbs/monkey+around.html http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/monkey%20around
