How much Spanish should someone know before spending a week in Cancun, on vacation?

You can manage with very little Spanish since Cancun is a big tourist destination. Many of the locals speak decent English.

I live near several Spanish holiday resorts and it amazes me how few people bother to learn even as much as please and thank you, so your question is like a breath of fresh air. Of course you don't NEED to have any Spanish because most resort workers speak some English, but a basic knowledge of Spanish will enhance your vacation experience. As a bare minimum, please and thank you plus hello, goodbye, counting and the names of drinks and food that you may order. So, "Cuatro cervezas y cuatro hamburguesas con queso, por favor." (4 beers and 4 cheeseburgers please) and when they are served, "Muchas gracias."
