Both. You have to define what you call depression. Some people say they feel depressed when everything feels like such a drag and they are in a bad mood for a short while. Clinical depression is a medical illness that can be caused by loss or by a chemical imbalance. When someone is clinically depressed they don't want to get out of bed. They may have thoughts of suicide. The may either have no appetite or overeat and they may either have insomina or sleep too much. Clinical depression does not go away without help either counseling, medication or a combanation of the two

Depression is a serious medical condition. What happens is that some people, when they feel sad and blue, they call it "depressed". The real depression should be treated by a Psychiatrist with medication, therapy and/or a combination of both.

It is both. Some people will have feelings of depression if say a close relative dies. That is natural. If you have feelings of depression for no apparent reason or if your depression lasts for more than two weeks you may have a problem with depression and my need medical care for it.
